Fusion Black Team History

If it wasn't for an 0 and 14 season, the South Dakota Fusion Black 14u team may never have happened. It was after the summer of 2003 that a group of dads got out of their lawn chairs and became coaches, knowing their girls could do much better. A number of the girls from that team are still with us today.
In 2004, we became the Daly Construction softball team, and with Trent Daly sponsoring us and sharing coaching with Darrell Bren and Lonnie Nichols, our team started to grow. We were winning games in the Sioux Falls Rec league. Our girls won eleven straight and finished fourth in league play.

By 2005, we were better and stronger. We were starting to play tournaments and win games. We were also taking our lumps from time to time, but the girls learned a lot and really grew that season. This is also the year the Daly Construction team went to their black and blue uniforms and started to take the field with "Back in Black" playing. Both have become a tradition for our team. We finished third in our league that summer.

It was the summer of 2006 that things really started to change, as we moved from a rec league team to a competitive schedule, and started playing even more tournaments. We finished second in a Sioux Falls tournament, second in our city tournament, and fifth at the South Dakota State Tournament. Our girls started seeing their work pay off and we beat the eventual state champions four straight times. We knew we had something.
2007 started slow. We had a few girls hurt, and struggled until mid June. We were a younger 14u team and it showed. We got our share of wins, but we were not where we hoped we would be. Once again, the girls proved that with hard work they could play with anyone...and did. By mid season, we started beating the teams we had struggled with in the past, and then started beating older teams. The season was capped with another fifth place finish at the state tournament and eliminating a potential state champion team.

In the fall of 2007, we were asked by Scott Powell to join his successful South Dakota Fusion organization for 2008. With that came more work, more practice and a name change. We have said goodbye to some old friends, but we have new ones we are proud to call teammates. There are two things that are unchanged as we continue to learn and grow: First, we are committed to helping our girls be the best softball players they can be, while teaching them to play with class and most importantly, to have fun! Second, we are still wearing our traditional black, now highlighted by the Fusion orange and silver instead of the Daly blue.

How will the 2008 season turn out when hit the road to play the toughest competition from the Midwest and Canada? We hope you will bookmark this website and check back here often at www.sdfusion.org to see.
