Fusion Black Wins 4th Annual Quakes Classic

April 26-27, 2008 - Omaha NE.

The Fusion Black 14U team started their season as cold as the Midwest weather this spring, but two days and five games later, the ladies in black were blazing hot, winning the 4th annual Quakes Classic.

Fusion Black started slow in their first game of the year, falling 7-0 to the Nebraska Storm.

Things turned around quickly by game two as Fusion turned the tables and beat Omaha Suburban Pride 7-0. The Fusion scored three in their half of the first inning and cruised to the win from there.

Game three of the day started much the way game one did, with Fusion Black down three runs in the first inning to Omaha Northside Nightmare. A black barrage of hits put Fusion on top 4-3 after one inning, and the girls never looked back getting an 8-4 win.

Sunday was a pressure packed day with two teams standing between Fusion Black and the Championship. Rival Sioux Falls Flash was first up. The game was scoreless until the Flash pushed a run across in the third inning to go up 1-0. Fusion answered with a run to tie the game. In the sixth inning, Fusion finally broke the game open scattering hit and scoring 5 runs to get the 6-1 win and move to the championship.

In the championship game, Fusion Black fell behind 1-0 to the Lincoln Rockets early, but managed to score two runs in the third inning to go up 2-1. The Rockets tied the game an inning later. A Laura Hurley bunt forced the Rockets to overthrow first base and Ceci Heiberger was able to score the game winning run from second base. See Video Highlights >>

With the win, the South Dakota Fusion Black is Qualified for the NAFA B Nationals in Lawrence Kansas.

Fusion Black's record is 5-1 and will be back in action May 10 for a double header with Vermillion, SD and Yankton, SD in Vermillion.
